Double Page Spread

1) How does the choice of band featured in the article suggest who the target audience will be?

From the choice of band that is featured suggests that the target audience is interested in up coming artists and the article is mostly targeted to the age group 15-25 and especially to girls. As the girl photographed on the double page spread is young and stylish the article is suggesting that the target audience is more likely to be girls that are interested in space-pop, indie. The target audience is interested in listening to new music bands and artists and is not scared to try out new styles.

2) What type of language is used in the article? Give examples of words or phrases which are specific to the style of the magazine

The type of language that is used in the article is colloquial. “Finished with punk, prog, jazz and indie… now for the dizzy heights of space-pop” “I don’t actually sing about horses”. Although the article is mostly written in colloquial language, more formal language is used as well.

3) How is colour used?

The colour used is black and white for the text, they have used a monochrome picture for this article and have emphasised mostly in the girls eye lashes and her face. The have emphasised on the girls face and they have used a light pointing at her, with a dark background at the back so it contrasts with her bright hair and face. The text is simple, no colour fonts have been used just only for the slug and the real name of the artist where purple and bright pink is used to create this young, girly look and also at the end of the article there is also a small logo with colours, which shows where the text ends.

4) What style of text is used? Is it similar to any other pages? What does it say about the image of the magazine and the audience?

They have not used Z-line text, the only time the text flows, is around the pull quote. The text is written in black font so it contrasts with the white background, and is kept quite simple. It is similar to the other double-page spreads although the thing that differentiates it is the pink and purple slug and logos used here. From this article it shows that the audience is interested in new up-coming artists and are willing to find out about new released albums, from the pink and purple colours used it is more likely that the article is mostly for girls. The text is written in both sans serif and serif font. The article starts off with a kicker to attract the audience’s attraction, by referring to the style of music that this specific artist plays.

5) How is the double page spread laid out? How much of the pages are taken up by images and how much by text? How does this reflect the audience? What do they value?

On the left side of the page there is a big picture of the artist which covers the whole left page and the picture takes up a bit of the right page, so they are focusing a lot on the picture. On the right page on the top there is a slogan to attract the audience and also on the top right there is a slug “NEW NOICE”. The text takes up the rest of the page. In the middle of the page there is a pull quote and underneath it there is the real name of the artist, Victoria Hesketh.

6) What tone is the magazine using when addressing the reader (as a close friend, a member of an 'in' crowd or an informed intelligent fan?) - provide evidence

The magazine is using a conversational tone but at the same time is quite formal as well. It is using a friendly tone when addressing to its readers.

7) How is the artist/band presented to the audience through the images? You may wish to carry out a textual analysis.

The artist is represented as a fresh, young girl, who is a new up coming artist, which is starting out her music career. The way her hair is tied up gives her a more sophisticated look but also a fresh one. Her big eye-lashes give a funky and stylish look to the specific artist and also her bright blue eyes are emphasised. It is not a very posy image, which shows that the artist is not that well-known to be in big photo shoots. From the dark background, and from the light shining on her face and hair , it gives as the idea that she is like a saint as she looks very innocent and also they are trying to cross out the message that she is a “good girl”.

8) How does the style of the article match the style of the front cover?

The article matches the front cover of the magazine as the article is about a new up coming artist, which NME mostly focuses on covering stories and articles on new up coming artists who are new in the music industry.

9) Does the article demand any prior knowledge? Give examples.
In the article "X-factor" is mentioned so the audince should be familiar, with these type of shows, also Nintendo Wii is mentioned , so readers should be aware of those as the magazine includes youth culture ,so the target audience should be familiar with them .
